All songs written and produced by Mills & Cockburn unless otherwise stated

Three representative songs from our live set of the time, recorded at “The Works” studio in Redditch over the course of a single day in March 1996.

Automation

Guitars: Andrew Cockburn, Anthony Mills
Backing Vocals: Bella Bloxham
Drums: Dave Wright
Bass: Steve Wilkinson

Previously discussed in The Funk Era, in this version Dave drives the song with his accomplished percussion and drumming, Andrew reprises his lead work, Steve and Bella add bass and backing Vocals.

Little Gun

Guitars: Andrew Cockburn, Anthony Mills
Backing Vocals: Bella Bloxham
Drums: Dave Wright
Bass: Steve Wilkinson

A tongue in cheek look at gun culture - Ant takes rhythm guitar, Andrew supplies Wah rhythm and a solo or two. Dave’s drumming underpins the song along with Steve’s driving bass.

(Andrew: All in all I was very happy with the production on these songs but was never happy with the lead sound I got from an overdriven Laney Combo amplifier)

Vote For Me

Guitars: Andrew Cockburn, Anthony Mills
Backing Vocals: Bella Bloxham
Drums: Dave Wright
Bass: Steve Wilkinson

The full realization of the demo track (The Funk Era). Andrew adds a brooding rhythm guitar to Steve’s understated bass line. Ant takes a turn on lead guitar for the opening solo, and Bella’s vocals shine in the harmonies, and unusually she takes lead in a verse or two.

(Andrew: I listen to this years later and I am impressed with how current Ant’s lyrics sound against the background of a USA presidential election)
